Your Pets Health DOGS (& CATS) - When the love of my life, Shadow, a stray I found in a parking lot, got sick I immediately took him to the vet. Shadow's fur started falling out in clumps. His skin became inflamed and fiery red. His incessant itching, scratching, and licking aggravated his sensitive skin more and more. He licked his paws until they bled to try to soothe the itching and irritation. He also had an ear infection. After spending hundreds of dollars on tests, including an allergy test, it was determined that Shadow was allergic to chicken, rice, and potato, just to name a few. I thought oh God, what am I going to feed this dog? After wiping the tears from my face, I went online to find answers. What I found about commercial pet food sickened me. I could not believe I paid top dollar for a bag of, literally, garbage.
(* See ingredients below)

I began to make him home cooked meals. I started out with beef as the base meat and gradually removed it from his home made recipe. Shadow had become a vegan dog. Over the course of several months, his health began to improve. His coat filled in and his ear infections stopped.

Since I was not a nutritionist, I felt I should find out what suppplements needed to go into his meals. I learned that dogs need two amino acids called L-carnitine and taurine and that cats need vitamin A and taurine.

I home cooked for Shadow for almost a year, gradually seeing his health improve. One day I followed a link to a manufacturer of vegan pet foods. I decided to order a bag and see if Shadow's health would continue to improve, or at least remain the same. Shadow loved his new food. He is healthy and happy and so is his sister Sabrina. Although Sabrina never fell victim to the pet food industry's poisoning, she also eats vegan dog food and is a healthy and happy dog.

Studies have shown that the ailments associated with meat consumption such as allergies, cancer, kidney, heart, and bone problems affect animals. Dogs’ and cats’ nutritional needs are easily met with a vegan diet and certain supplements. After switching dogs or cats to a vegan diet, monitor your pets closely to make sure their new diet agrees with them. Most dogs' and cats’ health improves on a vegan diet.
And an added bonus - they tend to live longer!

Common commercial pet food ingredients include:
* slaughterhouse waste products
* dead, dying, diseased or disabled domestic animals
* toxins and pollutants from rancid animal products and byproducts
* non-nutritional fillers
* heavy-metal contaminants
* herbicides
* drug residues
* sugar, artificial flavoring
* preservatives
* food rejected by the USDA for human consumption
* road-killed wild animals
* euthanized dogs and cats

Stop Animal Testing ANIMAL TESTING - "No Name" is imprisoned by Iams, a division of Proctor & Gamble. Although she was never given a name, I will refer to her as "Hope" for that seems to be all she has.

"Hope" is force fed Iams dog food in the name of nutritional tests. She lives in a dark building with no access to the outdoors or natural light, along with approximately 100 other dogs. Because she has no resting board and is not removed from the cage during cleaning time, she often is forced to sit or lie on wet concrete. She is lonely, sweet, and depressed.

For nearly 10 months in 2002 and early 2003, a PETA investigator went undercover at an Iams contract testing laboratory and discovered dogs gone crazy from intense confinement to barren steel cages and cement cells, dogs left piled on a filthy paint-chipped floor after having chunks of muscle hacked from their thighs, dogs surgically debarked, horribly sick dogs and cats languishing in their cages, neglected and left to suffer with no veterinary care.
